Smooth Opener in After Effects - No Plugins

Here’s an after effects tutorial on how to create a Smooth ‘Opener’ in After Effects without using any plugins.

Opening titles sequences are important not just because of the fact they give credit where it’s due, but also because they’re designed to capture the essence of the TV show or film’s story. The style, music, imagery, typography, and text animation of the opening sequence all work together to create a brilliant fusion between graphic design and filmmaking.

Like always this after effects tutorial is available on YouTube with free access, detailed, simple and easy to follow up guidance.

Q. What are ‘Null Objects’ in After Effects?

To assign a parent layer, but keep that layer from being a visible element in your project, a null object is used. A null object is an invisible layer that has all the properties of a visible layer so that it can be a parent to any layer in the composition. Adjust and animate a null object as you would any other layer. You use the same commands to modify settings for a null object that you use for a solid-color layer (Layer > Solid Settings).

A composition can contain any number of null objects. A null object is visible only in the Composition and Layer panels and appears in the Composition panel as a rectangular outline with layer handles. Effects are not visible on null objects.

Q. What is ‘Gradient Ramp’ in After Effects?

We’ll be using Gradients in this After Effects tutorial so have a look at what it is: The Gradient Ramp effect creates a color gradient. You can create linear or radial ramps, and vary the position and colors of the ramp over time. Use the Start Of Ramp and End Of Ramp properties to specify the start and end positions. Use the Ramp Scatter control to disperse the ramp colors and eliminate banding.

Q. What is ‘Liner Wipe Effect’ in After Effects?

Liner Wipe is one of the preinstalled Effects and Pre-sets of After Effects.

The Linear Wipe effect performs a simple linear wipe of a layer in a specified direction. At Draft quality, the edge of the wipe isn’t anti-aliased; at Best quality, the edge of the wipe is anti-aliased and the feather is smooth.

There are more effects like this: Block Dissolve Effect, Card Wipe Effect, Gradient Wipe Effect, Iris Wipe Effect, Radial Wipe Effect, etc.
